Sailing Suspension Notice

Following an emergency committee meeting, we regret to inform members that all sailing is still currently suspended due to high levels of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) in the lake.
As reported on WhatsApp, the latest readings show 140 μg/L, well above safety thresholds. This level is categorised as high risk.
Current Parks Trust Guidance (based on Environment Agency & WHO data):

  1. Green (0–9.9 μg/L)
     ✔ No action required
  2. Amber (10–49.9 μg/L)
✔ Parks Trust signage displayed at key entry points
✔ Water samples sent to the Environment Agency for confirmation
  3. Red (50+ μg/L)
✔ Clubs must consult insurers and assess whether to continue water activities

We have carried out a full risk assessment and concluded that sailing cannot safely resume at the current levels. Water quality is being tested twice weekly (Mondays & Fridays), and we will monitor results closely.
Our working plan is:
• Sailing may resume when levels drop below 50 μg/L, subject to:
o Individual risk disclaimers
o Confirmation that sailors are not at increased health risk
o Limited activities where full volunteer support (e.g. safety boat cover) cannot be guaranteed
• Normal club activity can resume when levels return to Amber or Green

For those wishing to continue sailing in the meantime, Stewartby Sailing Club is offering a 3-month temporary membership. Please contact them directly for details.
We hope the current algae bloom subsides quickly and thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
